日本からロサンゼルスへ
日本からアメリカはやっぱり遠い。夕方に日本を出て、ロスに着いたのは現地の朝11時。フライトは約10時間。今回はユナイテッド航空を利用しました。
前回（2023年）の渡米ではデルタ航空を使いましたが、機内食が絶望的にまずかった（ごめんなさい）。機内食が正直あまり合わず（ごめんなさい）。私はあまり好き嫌いがないほうですが、これは珍しく完食できませんでした。帰りの便では覚悟して空港で多めに食べ、機内でも食べられそうなものを持ち込んで搭乗。それでも、やはり可哀想な味でした。2023年の話ですし、人によって好みは違うので、あくまで個人的な感想です。なので今回デルタという選択肢はなし。
意外にもユナイテッドが最安値でした。預け荷物2個、直行便、往復で約13万。ただ事前に機内食を選べると書かれていたものの、結局最後まで選択できず。最近は細かいアップグレードが多く、私のチケットはその対象外だったのかもしれません。とはいえ、実際の機内食はそこそこ美味しく完食できました。
到着早々のトラブル
ロス空港に到着してまずeSIMをオンにしましたが、動かない。いろいろ調べて、最終的にChatGPTに聞いた結果は「期限切れ」。たしかに日本でテスト用にアクティベートしましたが、そんなはずは…と思いつつも、スマホが動かないのではどうしようもありません。Wi-Fiが入る空港で何とかしないといけない。仕方なく再度eSIMを購入。すると今度はすぐに電波をキャッチ。しかしよく見ると、事前に買っていた方が動いている。つまり、今買った分は完全に無駄。ダメ元で返金をチャットで依頼したところ、即座に返信があり、すぐに返金処理をしてくれました。ここまでとてもスムーズ。次回もここを使おうと思います。
使用したのはNomad eSIMというシンガポール拠点の会社ですが、私が調べた時点では最安でした。アメリカではAT&TやT-Mobileの回線を使うので、安定性も抜群。今回の旅でも不便を感じることは一度もありませんでした。モーテルのWi-Fiがつながらない時はテザリングもでき、30日20GBのプランを購入しましたが、20日で使い切ることに。次回は50GBぐらいを購入しようと思います。それにしてもChat GPT…
レンタカーを借りる
スマホ問題が解決したら、次はレンタカーです。レンタカーは日本で予約していました。2023年はフルサイズのピックアップ（ダッジラム1500）を借りましたが、荷台を使うことはまったくなし。それでも今回も同じくフルサイズのピックアップを予約。ただ最近はExpediaなどで日本語設定のまま検索すると、このクラスは出てこない可能性が高いです。観光客向きではないし、大きすぎるのも理由かもしれません。ただし、言語を英語にして通貨をドルにすると、表示される可能性が高いです。
アメリカのレンタカーはWebでの料金は安く見えますが、現地カウンターに行くと不安をあおられ、よく分からない保険を勧められ、最終的に想定より高くなることがよくあります。今回はそれを避けるため、事前に調べて最終的にAVISで直接予約しました。保険はWebで加入できる損害・対人対物のみに限定。ChatGPTにも相談しながら、必要最低限の補償にしました。
まさかのアップグレード
そして今回も予約したのはフルサイズのピックアップ。アメリカのバイクカルチャーでは一番嫌われる車種ですが、これこそアメリカ的な選択。候補はダッジラム1500かGMCシエラ。1ヶ月借りると、一番安いクラスと料金がそこまで変わらないんです。もちろん燃費は悪いですが。
ところが当日、ロス空港のAVISで「フルサイズピックアップは1台もないんだよ」と。アメリカ有数の空港なのに…代わりにSUVや中型ピックアップを提案されましたが、「中途半端にするくらいなら一番安い方がいい」と伝えると、スタッフが裏に回り「フルサイズSUVのシボレータホかフォードエクスペディションならどうか」と提案。予約した車種の1.5倍の料金ですが、今回は同額でOKとのこと。アップグレードですね。もちろん即決です。
その後はお決まりのように各種保険を勧められましたがスルーし、予約時の金額で完了。決済は返却後だったので少し不安はありましたが、万が一の場合は交渉すればいいと割り切りました。結果的に、この車は大正解だったと思います。2025年製のほぼ新車で、追尾レーダーなど最新機能が満載。今回の旅は合計約6100キロ走りましたが、1人で8時間×2日間のドライブもこのサイズだからこそ楽にこなせました。
ランクルよりひと回り大きいものの、アメリカは駐車場も広大。2023年は「駐車できずにモーテルをキャンセル」というハプニングもありましたが、今回は問題なし。ただ、サンタフェの地下駐車場だけはサイドミラーを畳まないと、入り口に入らないほどのギリギリ幅でした。アメリカの友人には「政府関係の車みたい」と言われ、映画で見るイメージは日本と同じなんだなと実感。

From Japan to Los Angeles
Flying from Japan to the U.S. always feels long. I left in the evening and arrived in LA around 11 a.m. local time — about a 10-hour flight. This time I flew with United Airlines.
On my previous trip in 2023, I took Delta, and honestly, the in-flight meal was… terrible (sorry, Delta). I rarely leave food unfinished, but that one was impossible to get through. On the return flight, I came prepared — ate plenty at the airport and brought snacks that seemed “safe.” Still, the flavor was tragic. Of course, that was just my experience — everyone’s taste is different — but it was enough to cross Delta off my list this time.
Surprisingly, United offered the best price: around ¥130,000 round trip, direct, with two checked bags included. It mentioned you could preselect meals online, but that option never appeared — probably excluded from my fare type. Still, the food on board turned out fine, and I finished every bite.
Trouble right after arrival
The first hiccup came as soon as I landed. I turned on my eSIM, and… nothing. After some troubleshooting (and finally asking ChatGPT), the verdict was “expired.” Apparently, activating it for a test in Japan had started the countdown. With no data, I was stuck. I bought another eSIM just to get connected, only to realize later that the original one had somehow reactivated — meaning I’d just wasted the new purchase.
I contacted customer support for a refund and got an immediate response — the money was back within minutes. That kind of smooth support deserves credit. I’ll use them again for sure.
The company is Nomad eSIM, based in Singapore. It was the cheapest option when I checked, and in the U.S. it runs on AT&T and T-Mobile networks — very stable. During the trip, it worked perfectly, even for tethering when motel Wi-Fi failed. I bought the 30-day, 20GB plan but used it all up in about 20 days. Next time I’ll go with 50GB. Still, kudos to ChatGPT for saving the day.
Renting a car
Once my phone issue was solved, it was time for the rental car. I’d booked it from Japan. Last time, I rented a full-size pickup (a Dodge Ram 1500), but I didn’t use the bed at all. Still, I went with the same class again — because, well, it’s America.
Note: if you search rental sites like Expedia in Japanese, this class rarely appears. It’s not tourist-friendly, and the size intimidates most people. Switch the site to English and currency to USD, and you’ll see many more options.
U.S. rentals can be tricky — the online price always looks cheap, but once you’re at the counter, they try to upsell extra insurance and fees. To avoid that, I booked directly through AVIS, limiting coverage to basic liability and collision. I even checked the details with ChatGPT beforehand — just the essentials.
The unexpected upgrade
I reserved another full-size pickup — ironically, the most hated vehicle among cyclists in America — but it felt like the most American choice possible. My shortlist was the Ram 1500 or GMC Sierra. Renting for a month, the price wasn’t much higher than smaller classes, though fuel economy is awful.
When I arrived at LAX, the staff said, “We don’t have a single full-size pickup available.” At one of the busiest airports in the U.S., really? They offered an SUV or midsize truck instead, but I said, “If it’s not the full-size, I’ll take the cheapest instead.” After a few minutes, they came back from the lot: “How about a Chevrolet Tahoe or Ford Expedition? Same price.” An instant yes — that’s an upgrade I’ll take.
As expected, they tried to pitch more insurance, but I politely declined and stuck with my original quote. Payment was processed after the return, which made me slightly uneasy, but I figured I could always negotiate if needed.
It turned out to be the perfect choice. A nearly new 2025 model, fully equipped with radar cruise control and modern features. Over the course of the trip, I drove about 6,100 km — including two solo 8-hour days — and the comfort made a huge difference.
The Tahoe is slightly larger than a Land Cruiser, but with America’s massive parking spaces, it was rarely an issue. In 2023, I even had to cancel a motel because I couldn’t park the truck — this time, no such trouble. The only tight spot was a Santa Fe underground garage, where I had to fold the mirrors to squeeze in. A friend joked it looked like a government vehicle, which honestly made sense — it really did have that movie vibe.
