アメリカ南部・ジョージア州の州都アトランタ。音楽文化が根付き、車社会としても知られるこの街で、The Spindleは2013年に自転車のための洋服屋さんとしてスタートしました。

その後、自転車に乗るときも、降りたあとも使えるオリジナルのバッグの開発・デザインを始め、定番モデルからカスタムバッグまで手がけるようになりました。

今では本格的なカスタムショップとして、「こんなバッグがあったら」という理想を一緒に形にし、さまざまな用途のバッグを作っています。

The Spindleの個性は、まずそのロゴ。

ロゴに使われているのは、1984年のコメディ映画『This Is Spinal Tap』に登場する架空のロックバンド、Spinal Tapをモチーフにしたフォント。この映画は、ロックバンドや音楽業界の大げささをユーモアたっぷりに風刺した作品です。彼らがロックンロール業界そのものを茶化していたように、The Spindleも同じような姿勢でサイクリングコミュニティと向き合っています。つまり、自転車業界のこともちょっと茶化しているんです。

彼らは、多くの人が自転車というものを少し真面目に考えすぎていると思っています。

もっと肩の力を抜いて、楽しめばいい。

ちょっとふざけたっていい。

イヤホンを外して、街の音や田舎道の音、その日自転車で走る場所の音に耳を傾けてみる。

ボロい自転車はもちろん、高価な自転車でもいい。

偏見なんて持たずに、とにかく乗ればいいんです。

The Spindleが大切にしているのは、シンプルで実用的なバッグを作ること。そして、アメリカ国内で調達した丈夫な生地を使って作ることです。

最後に日本の皆さんへメッセージをもらいました。

「このバッグをみんなに送れることを、本当に光栄に思っています。僕が作るのを楽しんだのと同じくらい、みんなにもガンガン使い込んでもらえたら嬉しいです。」

Atlanta, Georgia—the capital of the state and a city in the American South known for its deep musical roots and car culture. The Spindle started here in 2013 as a clothing shop for cyclists.

Over time, they began designing and making their own bags—pieces that work just as well on the bike as they do off it. What started with a few core designs eventually grew to include fully custom bags.

Today, The Spindle is a full custom shop, working with riders to turn their “I wish there was a bag for this” ideas into reality and making bags for all kinds of uses.

I asked EZZ, owner of The Spindle, what gives the brand its personality. Here’s what he told me:

I used the ‘Spinal Tap’ font as the used to make a mockery of the business of rock n’ roll..we used the same attitude in the cycling community..where we also make a mockery of the cycling industry..

I believe we take cycling to seriously..loosen up..have fun..prance a bit..take out the ear buds..listen to the sound of your city, the country roads, or where ever you’re taking your bike today..Ride a shit bike, ride an expensive bike..
