アメリカ13日目：Farewell
2025年10月13日。Santa Fe 2日目。今日はブリトーハウスですでに取引のある「Farewell」のオーナー、Ericと会う予定です。Santa Feでの大事な予定のひとつが、彼に会うことでした。
この期間に彼がSanta Feにいることは分かっていたものの、確実な予定は決まらないままここまで来ました。Ericは別の仕事も持っているうえに、最近はクライミングにかなり時間をかけているそうです。先週からウエストバージニアに遠征していて、たぶん私がSanta Feにいる間には戻ってくる予定だけど、明確な日程を決めるのは難しいとのこと。ただ「あなたと会えるように予定は調整する」と言ってくれていたので、この期間の滞在を決めました。
会うことが決まったのは当日だった
実は、今日会うことに決まったのは当日でした。朝、Ericに「Santa Feに到着したよ」とDMを送ると、ちょうど彼も今日の午前中にウエストバージニアから戻ってくるとのこと。その流れで「じゃあ今日会おう」という話になりました。
待ち合わせは、スタジオを兼ねている彼の家。本当は簡単にスタジオを見せてもらって、その後はSanta Feを自転車で案内してもらう予定でした。
雨の日のSanta Fe、そして会話の時間
ですが当日はあいにくの雨。ちなみに今回のアメリカ滞在は天候に恵まれていて、1ヶ月の滞在期間中に雨が降ったのはこの日だけでした。
一緒にライドできなかったのは残念でしたが、その分、家でゆっくり色々な話ができました。夜にはEricお気に入りのメキシカン料理屋にも連れていってもらい、とても良い時間になりました。Ericと過ごした内容については、Farewellのブランドストーリーに詳しく載せてあるので、ご興味があればぜひ読んでみてください。
Santa Fe名物？Blake’s Lotaburger
ちなみに今日のお昼は、Santa Fe発祥のハンバーガーチェーン店「Blake’s Lotaburger（ブレイクス・ロタバーガー）」。ここの名物はGreen Chile（グリーンチリ）を使ったバーガーです。
“Christmas style” の意味がやっと分かった
ニューメキシコでは「おすすめはクリスマススタイルのタコス」と言われていたのですが、最初は「なんでクリスマス？」と思っていました。
実はニューメキシコで「Christmas（クリスマス）style」と言うのは、Red chile（赤唐辛子ソース）とGreen chile（青唐辛子ソース）を両方のせるという意味らしいです。赤＋緑＝クリスマスカラー。
ニューメキシコでは “Red or green?” が定番の問いで、どっちも欲しい人が「Christmas」って頼むそうです。なんか、いかにもアメリカな感じですよね。
のんびりした午後、そして明日の予定
ということでSanta Fe 2日目は、昼までのんびりして、午後からEricとゆっくり話してきました。明日はダウンタウン方面にある自転車屋さんへ、モーテルからBike Fridayで行く予定です。

Day 13 in the U.S. Farewell
October 13, 2025. Santa Fe, Day 2.
Today I was meeting Eric, the owner of Farewell, a brand Burrito House has already been working with. Seeing him was one of the most important things on my list in Santa Fe.
I knew Eric would be in town at some point during this period, but we didn’t have anything confirmed until the last minute. He has another job, and lately he’s been spending a lot of time climbing. He’d been on a climbing trip in West Virginia since last week, and while he said he’d probably be back while I was in Santa Fe, it was hard for him to lock in an exact date. Still, he told me he’d try to adjust his schedule so we could meet, so I decided to stay in Santa Fe during this window.
We Decided to Meet on the Day
Funny enough, we didn’t finalize plans until that morning. I sent Eric a DM saying I’d arrived in Santa Fe, and he replied that he was actually flying back from West Virginia that morning. And just like that, it turned into “Let’s meet today.”
We met at his place, which also doubles as his studio. The original plan was to get a quick look at his workspace, then go for a ride around Santa Fe together.
A Rainy Santa Fe, and Time to Talk
But that day, it rained. And in fact, this was the only rainy day during my entire one month stay in the U.S.
I was a little disappointed we couldn’t ride together, but in a way, the rain gave us something better: time. We stayed in, talked slowly, and had the kind of conversation you don’t really get when everything is moving.
Later that night, Eric took me to his favorite Mexican restaurant. It was genuinely a really good evening. I’ve written more about the time I spent with Eric in the Farewell brand story, so if you’re interested, please check that out too.
Santa Fe Classic: Blake’s Lotaburger
For lunch, I went to Blake’s Lotaburger, a burger chain that originally started in Santa Fe. Their classic order is a burger topped with green chile, which is kind of a New Mexico staple.
I Finally Understood “Christmas Style”
While I was in New Mexico, I kept hearing people say things like, “You should try Christmas style tacos.” At first I was like, why Christmas?
Turns out in New Mexico, “Christmas style” means both red chile sauce and green chile sauce. Red plus green, Christmas colors.
Here, “Red or green?” is a standard question, and if you want both, you just say “Christmas.” It’s such an American thing in the best way.
A Slow Afternoon, and Tomorrow’s Plan
So that was Santa Fe day two: a slow morning, then a long afternoon with Eric. Tomorrow, I’m planning to ride my Bike Friday from the motel into the downtown area to visit a bike shop.
