2025年10月24日。ニューメキシコ13日目。
昨日はサンタフェ在住のSonnyとのランチ。
今日はアメリカに来る前から決めていた最後の予定です。自転車とは少し離れた内容なので、いつもより細かく記していこうと思います。
人生の節目として
今回のアメリカ長期滞在は、私にとって大きなターニングポイントでした。なにか具体的な変化というより、自分の内面での変化ですが。
そんなこともありアメリカへ来る前から、なんとなくTattooアーティストを探していました。
これまでもTattooはありましたが、普段は見えない場所。実は最初に入れた時から、もっと目に入る場所に入れたい気持ちはありました。ただ、会社員、特に営業職だった私には現実的ではなかったのですし、半分は諦めていたのかもしれません。
今回は人生の転機となる滞在の記録として、あえて視界に入る場所へ。図柄はこちらを向いています。人に見せるためというより、自分自身が見るためです。
今回の旅を通して、ブリトーハウスという存在が自分の生活や考え方の中心になっていることを改めて感じました。
この年代になって思うのは、昔からやりたかったことで、人に迷惑をかけないことであればやっておいた方が良いということです。
Emmaとの出会い
今回Tattooをお願いしたEmmaは、もともとドローイングやペインティングを行うアーティストで、現在はTattooアーティストとしても活動しています。
彼女の独特な世界観は以前からInstagramで追っていました。語彙が少ないのでうまく説明できないのですが、彼女の絵には一目で惹かれてしまいました。
Tattooを入れたいというより、彼女の作品がいつも見える場所にあったら良いなと思ったのです。
アメリカの計画をそろそろ本格的に決めようとしたころ、彼女から突然DMが届きました。
「サンタフェに来るなら一緒にライドしようよ」
私がInstagramで「オクラホマやニューメキシコへ行くのでおすすめの自転車屋さんやローカルショップを教えて！」と投稿していたものが、たまたま彼女のタイムラインに流れてきたそうです。
今振り返ると、あのタイミングで連絡をもらったのは不思議なものです。
実際には時間が合わず一緒にライドはできませんでしたが、またサンタフェを訪れる機会があれば、彼女やパートナーのAronと食事でもできたらと思っています。
予約
心の中でアーティストが決まったら、次は絵柄です。
これまでのTattooは自分用にカスタムしたデザインばかりでしたが、今回はEmmaの世界観そのものが好きだったので、彼女の作品の中から選ぶことにしました。
その後、彼女が所属するShrine Tattooへ予約を入れます。
想像以上に返信は早く、とても丁寧でした。希望するデザインと日程を伝え、まずはデポジットを支払います。
約20年ぶりのTattoo。慎重派の私は施術を滞在後半に設定しました。施術後も3日ほどサンタフェに滞在できるようにし、何かあればすぐスタジオへ行けるように。また、その期間は大きな予定やライドを入れないようにしていました。
Shrine Tattooへ
当日。
Shrine Tattooはサンタフェのダウンタウンにあります。本来ならモーテルから自転車で行ける距離ですが、慎重派の私は車で向かいます。
事前の下見で路上駐車が難しいことは分かっていたので、大きめの公共駐車場へ。
ところがこれが予想以上に狭い。アメリカで初めて「レンタカーが大きすぎる」と感じた駐車場でした。借りていたタホは全方位モニター付きでしたが、ドアミラーは手動。それだけミラーを畳みたくなるほど狭い場所は珍しいのでしょう。
無事に駐車してShrine Tattooへ向かいます。
Tattooのサインがなければ、おしゃれな雑貨店やアパレルショップのような外観。もちろん建物はサンタフェらしいアドビ建築です。
受付にはメールで丁寧に対応してくれたAndrewがいました。
その後Emmaとデザインの確認を行います。
図柄は決まっていたので、決めたのはサイズと場所だけ。色はすべてEmmaにお任せしました。
彼女のテイストが好きなので、そこに私の好みは入れません。
完成
施術は2時間ほどで終了。
ちなみに私は注射が結構苦手です。特に血液採取のように長時間針が刺さっている状態は本当に苦手。
でもTattooは平気なんです。人によく「変だね」と言われます。
完成したTattooは予想以上に素敵でした。
10月のサンタフェはオンシーズンらしく街には人も多く、旅行の記念のような感覚でTattooを入れていく人の姿も。
今回のTattooは、アメリカ旅行の記念というより、この数年の自分自身の変化を残すための記録だったのかもしれません。
そんなこんなで、とても良い時間を過ごすことができた1日でした。

Day 24 in America: Emma
October 24, 2025. Day 13 in New Mexico.
Yesterday I had lunch with Sonny, who lives in Santa Fe.
Today was the final thing I had planned before coming to the U.S. It’s a little removed from bicycles, so I’ll write about it in more detail than usual.
A Personal Turning Point
This long stay in America became a major turning point for me. Not because of any dramatic change on the surface, but because of something that shifted internally.
For that reason, I had been casually looking for a tattoo artist even before leaving for the trip.
I already had tattoos, but they were all in places that weren’t normally visible. Ever since getting my first one, I had wanted something I could see every day. But as a regular company employee—especially working in sales in Japan—it never felt realistic. Looking back, I had probably given up on the idea.
This time, I wanted a reminder of a meaningful period in my life, so I chose a spot that would always be within my sight. The design faces toward me rather than outward. It isn’t really for other people to see. It’s for me.
Throughout this trip, I realized once again how much Burrito House has become the center of my life and the way I think. One thing I’ve learned at this stage of life is that if there’s something you’ve always wanted to do, and it doesn’t hurt anyone, it’s probably worth doing.
Meeting Emma
The artist I chose was Emma.
Before becoming a tattoo artist, she was already creating drawings and paintings, and she continues to work as a multidisciplinary artist today. I had been following her work on Instagram for quite a while. It’s difficult for me to explain exactly why, but her artwork grabbed me immediately.
More than wanting a tattoo, I liked the idea of having one of her pieces with me all the time.
As I was starting to finalize my travel plans, I unexpectedly received a DM from her. “If you’re coming to Santa Fe, let’s go for a ride.” Apparently one of my Instagram posts—asking for recommendations for bike shops and local spots in Oklahoma and New Mexico—had appeared in her feed.
Looking back, it’s funny how things work sometimes.
We never managed to find time for that ride, but if I return to Santa Fe someday, I’d love to grab a meal with her and her partner Aron.
Making the Appointment
Once I knew who I wanted to work with, the next step was choosing a design.
In the past, all of my tattoos had been custom pieces made specifically for me. This time was different. I loved Emma’s visual language so much that I simply chose one of her existing works. After that, I contacted Shrine Tattoo, where she works. Their response was incredibly fast and thoughtful. I sent over the design and my schedule, then paid a deposit to reserve her time.
It had been nearly twenty years since my last tattoo.
Being a cautious person, I scheduled the appointment toward the end of my stay. I also left myself three extra days in Santa Fe afterward, just in case anything came up. During that time, I avoided planning any major rides or activities.
At Shrine Tattoo
The day finally arrived. Shrine Tattoo is located in downtown Santa Fe. I could have ridden there from my motel, but being the cautious person I am, I drove instead.
I’d already checked the area beforehand and knew street parking would be difficult, so I headed for a public parking garage. What I didn’t expect was how narrow it would be. It was the first time in America that I felt my rental car was simply too large. I was driving a Tahoe with a 360-degree camera system, but the mirrors folded manually. I suppose places narrow enough to require folding mirrors aren’t very common. After successfully parking, I walked over to Shrine Tattoo.
If it weren’t for the tattoo sign, it could easily have passed as a stylish clothing store or design shop. Like much of Santa Fe, the building was classic adobe architecture.
At the front desk was Andrew, who had been so helpful and professional throughout our email exchanges. Soon after, I sat down with Emma to go over the details.
The design itself had already been chosen, so we only needed to decide on placement and size. I left all color decisions entirely up to her. I trusted her eye completely.
The Finished Piece
The session took about two hours.
Ironically, I’m actually not great with needles. Blood draws and IVs make me uncomfortable. For some reason, tattoos don’t bother me at all. People often tell me that’s strange.
The finished tattoo turned out even better than I had imagined.
October is peak season in Santa Fe, and there were plenty of visitors around town. Some seemed to be getting tattoos as souvenirs from their travels.
For me, though, this tattoo felt like something different. Less a souvenir from America, and more a record of the personal changes that have taken place over the past few years. All in all, it was a very good day.
