Stillwaterという場所
アメリカ8日目・前編。今日もオクラホマは快晴。まずは、Stillwaterという街と、今回このブログに登場する人やお店を一度整理しておこうと思います。名前が多くて少しややこしいのですが、ここが分かると、この先の話が少し読みやすくなるはず。
Stillwaterは、アメリカ・オクラホマ州にある小さな大学町。ダウンタウンには自転車屋やカフェ、バーがほどよく集まり、街全体に「イベントが根付いている」空気があります。観光地というより、日常の延長線上にカルチャーがある街、という印象です。
今回のキーパーソンと場所
ここで、今回の滞在で関わる人と場所を簡単にまとめておきます。
DISTRICT BICYCLESは、Stillwaterのダウンタウンにある自転車屋さん。
The Mid South（旧 Land Run 100）は、Stillwaterを舞台に開催されるグラベルイベント。
Bobbyは、DISTRICT BICYCLESのオーナーであり、The Mid Southのディレクター。
Steady Co.は、Burrito Houseでも取り扱っているオクラホマ州のハンドメイドバッグブランドで、The Mid Southのアートワークも手がけています。
そしてWednesday Friendsday Rideは、DISTRICT BICYCLESが毎週水曜日に開催しているグループライドです。
書いている私自身でも、情報量が多いなと感じますが、今回の滞在では、この関係性の周りをぐるぐる回ることになります。
日中の散策と昼食
この日は夕方からWednesday Friendsday Rideに参加する予定だったので、日中はモーテルからダウンタウン周辺を、写真を撮りながらのんびり散策しました。
お昼は、Bobbyにすすめてもらった日本食屋さんへ。「Devoted」というお店で、彼のお気に入りはゆず塩ラーメンとのこと。もちろん同じものを注文します。
味はとても上品で、「日本のさっぱりしたラーメン」という印象。正直、とても美味しかったです。ただ、日本人の感覚だと少し高く感じるかもしれません。たしか2,500円くらい。それでも、アメリカではマックのランチセットが1,500円前後なので、そう考えると妥当なのかも。
ちなみに、今回の滞在で日本食を食べたのはこの一回きり。1ヶ月程度の滞在であれば、特に恋しくなることもなく、アメリカの食事は私にはとても合っていました。むしろ、美味しくてもっと食べていたいぐらい。
そうして日中をゆっくり過ごし、夕方、DISTRICT BICYCLESへ向かいます。

Stillwater as a Place
Another clear day in Oklahoma. Before getting into the ride itself, I want to take a moment to organize the place and the people that will appear throughout this story. There are quite a few names, and it can get confusing, but having this context makes what follows easier to read.
Stillwater is a small college town in Oklahoma. Downtown is compact, with bike shops, cafés, and bars sitting close together, and the whole town feels like events naturally grow out of everyday life. It’s not a tourist destination so much as a place where culture lives quietly alongside routine.
Key People and Places
Here’s a simple overview of the people and places that shape this stay.
District Bicycles is a bike shop located in downtown Stillwater.
The Mid South (formerly Land Run 100) is a gravel event held in and around the town.
Bobby is the owner of District Bicycles and the director of The Mid South.
Steady Co. is an Oklahoma-based handmade bag brand that Burrito House carries, and it also creates artwork for The Mid South.
Wednesday Friendsday Ride is the weekly group ride hosted by District Bicycles every Wednesday.
Even writing this, it feels like a lot, but during this visit, I found myself circling around this network again and again.
Wandering Downtown
Since I planned to join the Wednesday Friendsday Ride in the evening, I spent the daytime hours wandering around downtown from my motel, taking photos and moving at an unhurried pace. It was the kind of slow day that lets a town reveal itself naturally.
Lunch at Devoted
For lunch, I went to a Japanese restaurant Bobby had recommended called Devoted. His favorite dish was the yuzu shio ramen, so I ordered the same. The flavor was refined and light, very much a “clean” Japanese-style ramen. Honestly, it was excellent.
From a Japanese perspective, it felt a bit pricey—around 2,500 yen—but considering that a McDonald’s lunch in the U.S. can easily cost around 1,500 yen, it didn’t feel unreasonable. This was also the only Japanese meal I had during my stay. For a month-long trip, I never really missed Japanese food. American food suited me just fine—if anything, I wanted to keep eating it.
Toward the Evening Ride
After an easygoing afternoon, I made my way to District Bicycles as evening approached. The real reason for the day was about to begin.
