Wednesday Friendsday Ride
アメリカ8日目・後編。夕方にDISTRICT BICYCLESへ行くと、20人以上が集まる、かなり大きなグループライドでした。スタート前にBobbyが「日本から来た Burrito House も参加しています」と紹介してくれたのが、素直にうれしかったところ。この日はスタッフのEvanの誕生日でもあり、それをお祝いしながらのライド。こういうところに、アメリカのいい空気を感じます。
オクラホマの赤土グラベル
ライドはお店を出て、ひたすら南へ。ほぼグラベルです。オクラホマのグラベルは「赤土」と呼ばれます。鉄分（酸化鉄）を多く含む土壌のため、乾くと赤茶色に見え、締まっていて走りやすい。一方で雨が降ると一変し、重たい泥がタイヤやフレームにまとわりつく、なかなか厄介な路面になります。幸い、私が滞在していた期間は雨がなく、最高のコンディションでした。
SONICという目的地
往復で約40km。途中の目的地は、オクラホマ発祥のハンバーガーチェーン「SONIC」。SONICはドライブスルーではなく、本来は「ドライブイン」形式のお店。車を停めてスピーカー越しに注文し、お店の人が運んできてくれる、いかにも車社会のアメリカらしいお店。私が行った店舗はドライブスルー形式でしたが、自転車の場合は店の前のスピーカーで注文すると、ちゃんと持ってきてくれました。おすすめされたダブルチーズバーガーを注文。値段は覚えていませんが、とても美味しかった。
夜のグラベルと、サドルトーク
夕飯を終えたあとは、再びひたすらまっすぐなグラベルを走って戻ります。延々と続く直線。気持ちはいいのですが、20インチのBike Fridayでは、正直みんなについていくのがなかなか大変でした。夜になると街灯は一切なく、頼りになるのは前を走る人のテールライトだけ。その光が少しずつ遠ざかっていくのを、必死に追いかけます。
帰り道では、Bobbyとサドルトークをしながら走る時間もありました。Steady Co.やThe Mid Southのアートワークを始めたきっかけ、好きな音楽、これからやってみたいこと。Instagramに使った音楽も、このときの会話に出てきたバンドです。
ライドのあとの時間
無事にゴールして、みんなで少しワイワイしたあと、そのまま自転車でモーテルへ。参加していた皆さんは本当にフレンドリーで、20インチの私を気にかけてくれたり、自然に声をかけてくれたり。とても温かい雰囲気のライドでした。

Wednesday Friendsday Ride
When I arrived at District Bicycles in the evening, more than twenty riders had already gathered. It turned out to be a fairly large group ride. Before we rolled out, Bobby introduced me as “Burrito House, visiting from Japan,” which genuinely meant a lot. It was also Evan’s birthday—one of the shop staff—and the ride doubled as a casual celebration. Moments like this capture something I really like about American riding culture.
Oklahoma’s Red Dirt Gravel
We left the shop and headed straight south, almost entirely on gravel. Oklahoma gravel is often referred to as “red dirt.” The soil contains a high amount of iron oxide, giving it a reddish-brown color when dry. In these conditions, it packs down nicely and rides fast. When it rains, though, it turns into heavy clay that clings to tires and frames, becoming notoriously difficult. Luckily, there had been no rain during my stay, and the conditions were close to perfect.
SONIC as the Destination
The ride was about about 25 miles round trip, with our turnaround point being SONIC, a hamburger chain that originated in Oklahoma. SONIC is traditionally a drive-in rather than a drive-through—you park, order through a speaker, and staff bring your food out to the car. It’s a very American, car-centric setup. The location we visited used a drive-through format, but as a cyclist, I could order at the speaker out front and they brought the food over. I ordered the recommended double cheeseburger. I don’t remember the price, but it was genuinely good.
Night Gravel and Saddle Talk
After dinner, we headed back the same way we came—long, straight stretches of gravel disappearing into the dark. It felt great, but keeping up on my 20-inch Bike Friday was honestly tough. Once night fell, there were no streetlights at all. The only guide was the red glow of the rider ahead’s taillight. Watching that light slowly drift farther away was equal parts motivating and exhausting.
On the return ride, I had some time to chat with Bobby while riding side by side. We talked about how he started doing artwork for Steady Co. and The Mid South, the music he loves, and things he wants to try in the future. The music I used later on Instagram actually came from bands mentioned in that conversation.
After the Ride
We made it back without getting lost, hung around chatting for a bit, and then I rode straight back to my motel. Everyone on the ride was incredibly friendly—checking in on me with my small wheels, striking up conversations naturally. It was a warm, welcoming group from start to finish.
