アメリカ14日目：Sincere Cycles
2025年10月14日。Santa Fe 3日目。今日はニューメキシコ州ではじめて自転車屋さんを訪問。まずはこのエリアではかなり有名な「Sincere Cycles」。The Radavistにも頻繁に名前が出てくるお店です。ここも色々な方からおすすめをもらい、事前にDMだけしていました。お店の場所はSanta Feのダウンタウンの少し外れぐらい。今日はモーテルからBike Fridayで自走。自転車屋さんに行くなら、できれば自分の自転車で行きたい。昨日FarewellのEricから「モーテルのエリアからサイクリングロードがある」と聞いていたので、それを探しながら向かいました。
Sincere Cyclesの情報はInstagramを見たり、周りの人に聞いていたのですが、訪問するまでは少し敷居が高いお店のような印象もありました。でもみんながお勧めするお店。そういえばオクラホマ州のBobby（DISTRICT BICYCLES）にもおすすめされていた。さてどんなお店やら。
Google mapのナビは、普通に使える
Google mapのナビ通りに自転車で進みます。少し話はずれますが、Google mapは当たり前ですがアメリカでも日本と同じように使えます。ただアメリカに到着したばかりだと音声案内が英語に。しばらくすると日本語に戻ります。たぶんIP情報でアメリカと認識するけど、iPhoneの情報から使用者が日本人と分かるんでしょうね。行きたい場所の検索や保存も日本と同じようにできるのでとても便利。あとから見返すのも楽です。
西部劇みたいな建物の中に
そしてSincere Cycles到着。まず建物が西部劇に出てくるような建物（語彙が少ないですね）。ニューメキシコのアドビ建築の中にぽっかりと、いい意味で時代に置き去りにされたような雰囲気がとてもいい。
前情報から少し恐る恐る入ってみたところ、中からはとてもフレンドリーなオーナー、Baileyが。いい意味で完全に期待が外れました。Sincere Cyclesもまたよい雰囲気。Baileyの趣味が至る所に見え隠れしています。
自転車が少ない理由
ただ、自転車の数が少ない。聞くと、Sincere Cyclesは今年だけで2回も空巣に入られたようです。その時に持っていかれたのが主に自転車のフレームと一部の工具類。ぱっと見た感じ、そこまで治安が悪そうな場所ではないのですが、近くにドラッグ問題を抱えているホームレスの溜まり場があり、その影響かも、と。
Baileyの近況
私が来て少し経つとお客さんがずっと来ていたので、あまり長くは話せませんでしたが、Baileyは最近トレールランニングにハマっているとのこと。自転車で怪我をした時にリハビリをかねて走り始めたところ、とても面白くてはまってしまったそうです。Sincere CyclesのInstagramを見ると、たしかによく彼が走っているのを見ます。
同じSanta Feなので、もちろんFarewellともお友達。Send It Safelyともお友達。あまり長い時間話すことはできませんでしたが、ゆっくりと店内の写真を撮らせてもらいました。
Mega Mid Southの話
最後に「Bobbyがよろしくと言ってたよ」と伝えると、Baileyは2週間後にオクラホマで開催されるMega Mid Southに出場するとのこと。
少しここでおさらいもかねて。Mid South（ミッドサウス）は、アメリカ・オクラホマ州のStillwater（スティルウォーター）を舞台にした大規模なグラベルイベントです。レースというより、週末をまるごと使ったお祭りのような雰囲気で、全国からライダーやランナーが集まります。そのMid Southが長年作り続けてきたルートをベースに、より冒険色を強めたのがMega Mid South（メガ・ミッドサウス）。こちらはイベント当日に走るレースではなく、約300マイル（約480km）の長距離ルートを自分のペースで走る“バイクパッキングチャレンジ”です。要するに、Mid Southが育ててきた土地とコースの魅力を、もっと深く長く味わうための別フォーマット、と考えると分かりやすいと思います。
BaileyはWILDEのMean Jeanで出るとのこと。そういえばWILDEが多く置いてあったので、なぜかと聞くとシンプルに「Jeffrey（WILDEのオーナー）を知っているから」とのこと。アメリカでよく聞く「Support your friends’ businesses」が、さりげなく感じられた一瞬でした。

そしてシャワルマ
お店に行った時、Baileyはお昼ご飯を食べていて、とても美味しそうな匂いがしていました。このエリアのおすすめのお店を聞くと、予想通りいま食べていたもののお店。フードトラックらしいのですが、「シャワルマ」という種類のごはん。実はこのシャワルマにどハマりして、Santa Feにいる間はけっこうこのお店に通うことに。
今日という一日
今日はこのままサイクリングロードを走ったり、適当に写真を撮ったりした1日。明日はSanta Feでおすすめされた違うお店に行く予定です。今日の写真はSincere Cyclesと付近の風景。ご興味があればこちらから。
Day 14 in the U.S.: Sincere Cycles
October 14, 2025. My third day in Santa Fe. Today I visited a bike shop in New Mexico for the first time. The place was Sincere Cycles, a well-known shop in this area that often appears on The Radavist. Several people had recommended it to me, so I had sent a DM in advance.
The shop is located slightly outside downtown Santa Fe. I rode there from my motel on my Bike Friday. If I’m going to a bike shop, I prefer to arrive on my own bike. The day before, Eric from Farewell had told me there was a cycling path starting near the motel area, so I looked for that as I headed out.
Before visiting, most of what I knew about Sincere Cycles came from Instagram and word of mouth. I had the impression it might be a slightly intimidating place. Still, so many people had recommended it. I also remembered that Bobby from District Bicycles in Oklahoma had mentioned it. I was curious to see what kind of shop it really was.
I followed Google Maps on my phone as I rode. A small aside here—Google Maps works in the U.S. just as it does in Japan. When you first arrive, the voice guidance switches to English, but after a while it returns to Japanese. It probably recognizes the location as the U.S. through IP data, but knows the user is Japanese from the iPhone settings. Searching, saving places, and looking back later all work the same, which makes traveling much easier.
I arrived at Sincere Cycles. The building itself looked like something out of a Western movie—New Mexico adobe architecture, with a feeling of being gently left behind by time, in a good way.
I stepped inside a little cautiously, but was immediately greeted by the owner, Bailey, who was very friendly. My expectations were completely overturned, in the best sense. The shop had a great atmosphere, and Bailey’s personal taste showed through in many small details.
One thing I noticed was that there weren’t many bikes on display. When I asked, Bailey explained that the shop had been broken into twice just this year. Most of what was stolen were bike frames and some tools. At first glance, the area didn’t seem especially unsafe, but nearby there is a spot where homeless people dealing with drug issues tend to gather, and that may be part of the reason.
After I arrived, customers kept coming in, so we didn’t have much time to talk. Still, Bailey mentioned that he has recently gotten into trail running. After injuring himself while riding, he started running as part of his rehabilitation and ended up really enjoying it. Looking at Sincere Cycles’ Instagram, you can see him running quite often.
Since we’re both in Santa Fe, he’s friends with Farewell and also with Send It Safely. I didn’t stay long, but he kindly let me take photos of the shop at a relaxed pace.
Before I left, I told him, “Bobby says hi.” Bailey replied that he would be riding the Mega Mid South in Oklahoma in two weeks.
As a quick refresher: Mid South is a large gravel event held in Stillwater, Oklahoma. It feels less like a race and more like a weekend-long festival, drawing riders and runners from all over the country. Mega Mid South is a more adventurous offshoot, based on routes Mid South has developed over the years. It isn’t a race held on a single day, but a self-paced bikepacking challenge of about 300 miles. In a way, it’s another format for experiencing the land and routes that Mid South has cultivated, just more deeply and over a longer time.
Bailey plans to ride a WILDE Mean Jean. I had noticed there were quite a few WILDE bikes in the shop and asked why. His answer was simple: “I know Jeffrey,” the owner of WILDE. It was a small moment, but it quietly reflected something I often hear in the U.S.—support your friends’ businesses.

When I arrived, Bailey was eating lunch, and the smell was incredible. When I asked for food recommendations in the area, he pointed me to exactly what he was eating. It turned out to be from a food truck serving shawarma. I ended up completely hooked, and while staying in Santa Fe, I went back to that spot more than once.
After leaving the shop, I spent the rest of the day riding along the cycling path and taking photos without much of a plan. Tomorrow, I’ll visit another place that was recommended to me in Santa Fe.
