アメリカ23日目：Sonny
2025年10月23日。ニューメキシコ12日目。
昨日はサンタフェで、一人ぼっちの初トレイル。軽いものなのかは人によると思いますが、私としてはかなり満足できる時間でした。
今日は、Send It SafelyやDOOM BARSなど、ニューメキシコブランドのイラストも手掛けるTattoo Artist、Sonnyとランチへ。彼のことはSend It Safely周辺のInstagramでよく見かけていて、ひょんなことから連絡を取り始め、今回会うことになりました。サンタフェ在住ということもあり、今回の旅でぜひ会いたかった一人です。
会う前から感じていた優しさ
アメリカへ来る前、旅のスケジュールを話していた時に、「使っていない部屋があるから泊まりに来ても大丈夫」と声をかけてくれました。
ただ、今回は2週間以上サンタフェに滞在していることもあり、そこまで甘えるのも申し訳ない気持ちがありました。そもそも、まだ実際には会っていなかったので、今回は丁重にお断りすることに。
そして今日、ようやく会えることになり、Sonnyおすすめのローカルレストラン「The Pantry Restaurant」で待ち合わせしました。
ニューメキシコとメキシカン料理
ローカルの人がおすすめする店は、本当に人気店。混むとは聞いていたので少し早めに向かいましたが、木曜にもかかわらずすでに数組のウェイトが出ていました。
店内は温かみのあるニューメキシカン料理のお店。実際かなり美味しく、とても満足。そういえば、FarewellのEricがおすすめしてくれたレストランもメキシカン料理でした。
単純にニューメキシコにはメキシカン料理店が多いのか。それとも、店名が「ブリトーハウス」だから、みんな気を使ってくれているのか。今回は聞きそびれてしまったので、次回またおすすめがメキシカン続きだったら聞いてみようと思います。
自転車が繋いでくれるもの
写真を見るとわかると思いますが、Sonnyは身体中にTattooがあり、一見かなりコワモテ。でも実際は、とても気さくで本当に優しい人でした。
18歳からTattoo Artistを始めたこと。Send It Safelyとの関係。イラスト制作の話など、いろいろな話を聞くことができました。
何度も書いていますが、「自転車」という共通のキーワードがあると、本当にいろんな人と繋がれる。そして、実際に会ってくれたアメリカの人たちは、みんな驚くほど優しい。
初対面とは思えない距離感で接してくれて、私のつたない英語にもちゃんと耳を傾けてくれることに感謝です。
旅も後半に入り、少し余裕も出てきました。サンタフェを出発する前にもう一度会おうと話し、今日はホテルへ戻りました。
Day 23 in America: Sonny
October 23, 2025. Day 12 in New Mexico.
Yesterday was my first solo trail ride in Santa Fe. Depending on the person, it might not seem like much, but for me it was more than satisfying.
Today I met up for lunch with Sonny, a tattoo artist who also creates artwork for New Mexico brands like Send It Safely and DOOM BARS. I had seen him often through Send It Safely’s Instagram posts, and somehow we eventually started talking online. Since he lives in Santa Fe, he was one of the people I really hoped to meet on this trip.
The Kindness I Felt Before We Even Met
Before coming to America, while talking about my travel plans, Sonny told me, “I have an extra room if you ever want a place to stay.”
Still, since I was already spending more than two weeks in Santa Fe, I felt bad accepting that kind of generosity. We hadn’t even met in person yet, so I politely declined.
Today we finally met in person at Sonny’s recommendation, a local restaurant called The Pantry Restaurant.
New Mexico and Mexican Food
One thing I’ve learned is that local recommendations are usually popular for a reason.
I showed up a little early because Sonny warned me it would get busy, but even on a Thursday there were already several groups waiting.
The restaurant had a warm New Mexican atmosphere, and the food was genuinely excellent. Funny enough, the restaurant Eric from Farewell recommended earlier on the trip was also Mexican food.
Maybe New Mexico just has a lot of Mexican restaurants. Or maybe everyone sees the name “Burrito House” and assumes that’s what I want to eat.
I forgot to ask this time, but if the same thing happens again on my next trip, I’ll have to ask.
What Bikes Connect
You can probably tell from the photos, but Sonny is covered in tattoos and looks pretty intimidating at first glance. In reality, though, he was incredibly kind and easy to talk to.
We talked about how he started tattooing at eighteen, his connection with Send It Safely, and his motivation behind creating artwork.
I’ve said this many times already, but having “bicycles” as a shared language really connects people.
And honestly, every American I’ve met on this trip has been surprisingly kind. People talk to me like we’ve already known each other for years, and I’m grateful they take the time to listen carefully even when my English isn’t perfect.
Now that the trip is moving into the second half, I’m starting to feel a little more settled. Before leaving Santa Fe, we agreed to meet again one more time, and after that I headed back to the hotel.
