2025年10月1日から31日まで、2年ぶりにアメリカに滞在します。
前回の2023年は、記念すべき第1回のMADE Bike Showを観に、オレゴンを中心に滞在しました。まだ「燃え上がる前のMADE」の空気を肌で感じられた貴重な体験でした。
実はMADEのチケットを申し込んだとき、会場は「Rose Quarter」と発表。それが1ヶ月か2ヶ月前に、現在のZidell Yardsに変更。土地勘のない自分は、あわてて宿を変更したのをよく覚えています。
でも結果的には、Zidell Yardsで最適解かも。
もともとは造船工場だった場所で、日本で言えば「倉庫跡地」のような場所。
決して整った綺麗な会場ではなかったけれど、ハンドメイドバイクという「無骨で人の手の跡が感じられるカルチャー」とよく合っていたのが印象的でした。
バッグに惹かれた視線
私自身はハンドメイドバイクの知識はほとんどなく、有名なビルダーが多数出展していたのは知っていたけど、自分の視線を惹かれたのは、バッグやグッズ系のブランドでした。
Lords LuggageやLUGS NOT DRUGSは現在もお取引があり、Tunitas CreativeやJack’s Sacksなどもその場で相見えることができて、個人的には十分満足。
Southwest Aestheticへの憧れ
MADEを一度見て「お腹いっぱい」になった感覚があって、次は全く違う州をターゲットに。
ご存じのとおり、家号はブリトーハウス。ブリトーが大好きで、メキシコ的な色味や空気感も常に好きなイメージとしてありました。
おそらく自分が惹かれるのはTex-Mexではなく、Southwest Aesthetic。アドビ建築、サンドベージュ、レンガ色、ターコイズ、光にさらされたトーン……
それらを味わうために、ニューメキシコ州・サンタフェにのんびり滞在することにしました。
Send It Safelyが線を広げてくれた
この旅の出発点は、実は「Send It Safelyに会いたい」だったかもしれません。このブランドは、ニューメキシコ州・アルバカーキを拠点に。
そこから「どうせ行くなら周りも見てみたい」という流れで、オクラホマ州にも繋がりました。
こちらには、これまでお取引のあるブランドのアトリエがあります。日程調整中で、まだお会いできるかは不明ですが。
Bike Fridayと一緒に
1ヶ月の滞在に合わせ、今回もスーツケースにBike Fridayを詰め込んで出発します。
当初は「時間を持て余しそうだから、一人でライドしたり、街を写真に撮れればいいかな」と考えていました。
予想以上の反響
1ヶ月前、Instagramでこんな投稿をしました：
「オクラホマやニューメキシコで『ここは行くべき！』というバイクショップやローカルのお店があれば、ぜひコメントやDMで教えてください！」
2〜3件返信があれば嬉しいな、ぐらいの気持ちだったのに、予想を超える反響が。
距離感の近さ
こういった「ラフなやりとり」に対するハードルがアメリカは低いのだなとしみじみ感じました。
オクラホマでは3軒のバイクショップを紹介され、うち2軒とは一緒にライドにも行く予定です。
まったく面識なしの自分に「夕方集合して走ろう」と自然に言ってくれることが、なんだか非常に心が温かくなりました。
サンタフェでは2週間ほど滞在予定。
Silver Cityに拠点を持つMONE BIKESからも声をかけてもらったのですが、サンタフェから片道6時間ほどとあまりに遠く、今回は見送ることにしました。
でも、いつか行ってみたい場所のひとつとしてSilver Cityはとっておきます。
自転車がくれたつながり
出発まで、あと2週間を切りました。暇になるはずだったスケジュールは、ありがたいことに少しずつ埋まってきています。
あらためて感じるのは、「自転車」が人と人を繋いでくれるということ。共通言語があるだけで、こんなにも世界が近づく。
今回の1ヶ月もきっと、いろんな出会いが待っている気がします。
これから記していくこと
というわけで、久しぶりのブログ投稿でした。
これからしばらくは、アメリカ滞在のこと、記憶に残ったお店や景色、Instagramでは書ききれない細かな気づきなどを、ここに記していこうと思います。

Heading to the U.S. in October 2025
From October 1st to 31st, I’ll be spending about a month in the U.S.—my first time back in two years.
Back in 2023, I visited Oregon to experience the very first MADE Bike Show. It was a rare chance to feel the raw energy of MADE before it gained full momentum.
When I initially got my ticket, the venue was listed as Rose Quarter. But just a month or two before the event, it was moved to Zidell Yards. I remember scrambling to change my accommodation, unfamiliar with Portland’s layout at the time.
In the end, though, I’m glad it changed. Zidell Yards, a former shipyard, had a rugged, industrial charm—like an old warehouse district in Japan. Far from polished, but that imperfection actually fit the handmade bike scene perfectly. There was something beautiful in the roughness.
Drawn to the Bags
I don’t know much about custom framebuilding, and though many legendary builders were exhibiting, what caught my eye were the bags and accessories.
Brands like Lords Luggage and LUGS NOT DRUGS—whom I now work with—stood out. I also got to see others I admire like Tunitas Creative, Jack’s Sacks. For me, that alone was more than enough.
Drawn to the Southwest Aesthetic
After one round of MADE, I felt full in the best way. So for my next trip, I wanted a completely different experience—somewhere I’d never been before.
As you may know from my shop name, Burrito House, I love burritos. And I’ve always been drawn to Mexican-inspired design, color, and atmosphere.
What I’m into isn’t exactly Tex-Mex, but more the Southwest Aesthetic—adobe buildings, sand tones, brick red, turquoise, and those sun-faded hues that linger in desert light.
That’s why I’ve decided to stay a while in Santa Fe, New Mexico. To feel that atmosphere firsthand.
It All Started with Send It Safely
In truth, this trip really began with one simple reason: I wanted to meet the folks at Send It Safely, a brand I admire based in Albuquerque.
From there, it made sense to visit surrounding states. That led me to Oklahoma, where another brand I work with is based. We’re still finalizing dates, but I hope to meet in person.
Traveling with My Bike Friday
Like last time, I’ll be packing my Bike Friday into a suitcase and hitting the road.
At first, I figured I’d have plenty of downtime—ride solo, take photos, and enjoy the slow pace.
An Unexpected Response on Instagram
A month ago, I casually posted on Instagram:
“If you know any must-visit bike shops or local spots in Oklahoma or New Mexico, I’d love your recommendations—DMs welcome!”
I was expecting maybe two or three replies. But the response was far beyond what I imagined.
The Warmth of American Casualness
I realized how naturally people in the U.S. engage in low-barrier conversations like this.
In Oklahoma, I got introduced to three bike shops—and I’m now planning rides with two of them.
People I’ve never met before are saying, “Let’s meet up and ride in the evening.”
It’s genuinely heartwarming.
In New Mexico, too, I’ve received great tips—not just bike-related, but local gems across the board.
I plan to base myself in Santa Fe for about two weeks.
I also got an invite from mone bikes in Silver City, but it’s a 6-hour drive from Santa Fe, so I had to pass this time.
Still, it’s definitely on my list for a future trip.
Connections Built by Bicycles
Now, with two weeks to go, what I thought would be an empty schedule is gently filling in.
Once again, I’m reminded of how bicycles bring people together.
Having that shared language—pedals, gears, stories—makes the world feel smaller in the best way.
This coming month will surely be filled with new encounters, and I’m excited to see what unfolds.
